The Process

The process of flower preservation before casting in resin involves several steps to ensure the flowers maintain their color, shape, and beauty throughout the preservation and casting process. Here’s an overview of the typical steps involved:

From start to finish can be 3-6 months

Orders are done by first come first serve. If we are backed up we will preserve the floral, prep and store them in a secure, safe location until piece is ready to start. Some pieces can take as long as 8 months.

1. Preparing the Flowers

  • Get us the flowers asap: The best flowers to preserve are ones that are in peak condition. Flowers that are too wilted or damaged won’t preserve as well.

  • After deciding your pieces; we prepare the flowers based off the choices: We cut the flowers to the desired length, especially if you're incorporating them into a smaller resin piece.

2. Drying the Flowers

  • Pressing: One common method is to press flowers using flower presses or between sheets of parchment paper, placing them under a heavy weight. This method flattens the flowers, making them perfect for things like jewelry or framed pieces.

  • Air Drying: Some flowers may be air-dried by hanging them upside down in a dry, cool place with good airflow. This process takes longer but is suitable for more dimensional flowers.

  • Desiccants: Another option is using desiccants like silica gel, which absorbs the moisture from the flowers while helping them retain their shape.

  • Freeze Drying:  Freeze-drying (also known as lyophilization) is a gentle, scientific drying method where flowers are frozen at extremely low temperatures and then placed under vacuum pressure.

This allows the moisture inside the flowers to turn into vapor without ever becoming liquid again — a process called sublimation.

This method keeps the petals soft, fluffy, hydrated-looking, and true to their original shape.

3. Sealing the Flowers

  • Flowers are often sealed with a technique to prevent the petals from becoming brittle or discolored. The spray helps lock in the shape and color of the flowers before they’re embedded in resin.

4. Arranging the Flowers

  • Once dried and sealed, the flowers are arranged in the mold or design. This step is crucial for customizing the piece, as flowers need to be placed thoughtfully to achieve the desired look.

Artistic Arrangement Notice

By booking with Backroads Resin Co., you are giving the artist full creative freedom to design a truly custom, one-of-a-kind piece made just for you.

Flower placement and artistic arrangement are solely at the discretion of the artist to ensure the best visual balance and long-term preservation. Once your piece is cast in resin, it cannot be altered or redone.

Thank you for trusting the creative process and allowing us to craft a piece as unique as your story. ✨

5. Choosing your color

  • Black or White ?

To create the most polished and artistic final piece, your flowers will be preserved in either a black or white resin base. These colors beautifully highlight the florals while also minimizing any natural imperfections that may appear during the preservation process.
Please select black or white for your background before we begin.

7. Casting in Resin

  • Mixing Resin: The resin is mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring the correct ratio of resin and hardener.

  • Embedding the Flowers: The prepared flowers are carefully placed into a mold, and resin is poured over them. Multiple layers of resin may be poured, with each layer allowed to cure before the next layer is added, to avoid the flowers floating or shifting.

  • This can be a 4-8 step process depending on thickness, arrangement, layers and more..  this is a very time consuming technique as the pieces are created and formed to artistic pieces.

8. Curing and Final Touches

  • Curing: The resin is left to cure for several days or even weeks, depending on the type of resin used. Once fully cured, the piece is removed from the mold.

  • Finishing: Any excess resin is sanded or polished to create a smooth, clear finish, highlighting the preserved flowers.

  • Final Coat is then applied

After this, you have a beautifully preserved floral resin piece ready for use as jewelry, home decor, or any custom item! We do like the pieces to set on the shelf for a few weeks to fully cure!

9. shipping

We then start the shipping process. Shipping is an additional cost but you are welcome and come to the shop and pick up to save on this cost as pieces are heavy and delicate. We will do our best in packaging the pieces for care but we ARE NOT responsible for shipping damages & costs.
